The 21st Century Office application is written and distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL version 3 or any later version) which means that its source code is freely-distributed and available to the general public. WWF encourage all stakeholders to make use of the 21st Century Office application and develop it further.
The application is available on three platforms (web, iPhone and Android) and allows people to:
- measure their CO2, time and money savings from new technology solutions for smarter office work
- share, geotag, use and rate ideas how to achieve a 21st Century Office
- see where in the world ideas were first generated and then
- follow to see where the idea has been used
- twitter and e-mail ideas and test results to challenge others to participate and work smarter
- build up a database that can be used to create tailor-made roadmaps for a transition to a 21st Century office
- see a movie that explains the difference between a 20th century and a 21st century infrastructure
- and a few more functions…
Is all this too much to have in one app? Maybe, or maybe these kind of integrated solutions will contribute to new tools being developed to
help society move towards a smart, low carbon, high-tech future. A development with solutions that nine billion people can use.
The 21st Century office illustrates three important aspects:
- Products to services: The possibility to move from a product perspective of sustainability management where existing solutions are made incrementally better, to a service perspective where we look for totally new ways of providing the same service.
- A virtuous circle of transformative solutions: The opportunities that exist for transformative solutions that help reduce emissions by 80-100%, and sometime even turn problems into solutions as can be demonstrated when the need for an office is reduced or eliminated and the resources saved are invested in further innovation and adoption of low-carbon technologies, thus creating a virtuous circle.
- Moving ideas, not goods: The need to move as much as possible from a carbon intensive 20th century infrastructure based on the movement of goods, to a low carbon 21st century infrastructure based on the movement of information and ideas. During the 21st Century, the office is an integrated part of a high-tech society that allows employees to be creative and productive in the most efficient way.
When moving from services depending on a 20th Century infrastructure to services depending on a 21st century infrastructure, the underlying infrastructure is important to include in calculations. Please see the following pdf-document for an explanation on how the calculations in this application were done.
